As a German federal enterprise, we provide our clients and commissioning parties with sustainable and impactful solutions for political, economic and social processes of change in over 130 countries.
In Germany, we bring together the interests of local actors and those of international partners, including some from emerging economies and industrialised countries.
Our customers include other national governments, federal and state ministries in Germany, civil society organisations, universities and private-sector companies.
North Rhine-Westphalia is amongst the 20 largest economies in the world and one of the most important locations for science, research, industry and innovation in the whole of Europe. For many years now, GIZ has been building bridges on behalf of its clients and commissioning parties – from the metropolitan region of North Rhine-Westphalia out into the entire world. Thus our partners in other countries benefit from NRW’s expertise in areas such as energy, structural change and environmental protection.

Our references in NRW
International cooperation with NRW – in Ghana and the Middle East
We are helping NRW to achieve its development priorities in a wide range of projects. In our partner country of Ghana, we are implementing projects on mitigating climate change, the circular economy, and sustainable economic development and employment promotion. In the Middle East, there have been projects in Syria, Lebanon and Jordan. There, with the help of expertise from NRW we promote technical and vocational education and training as well as local wastewater management. We also support communities hosting refugees.
Sustainable economic cooperation – AFRIKA KOMMT!
Leading German DAX-listed and family-owned companies set up the ‘AFRICA KOMMT!’ (‘AFRICA IS COMING!’) training initiative in 2008. The basic idea is to create a win-win situation for up-and-coming African managers as well as the companies that get involved. These young managers are invited to come to Germany and familiarise themselves with the country through an internship and management training programme. At the same time, the companies make contact with experts who know their home regions in Africa like the back of their hand. The programme is thus laying the foundations for sustainable economic cooperation with Africa.
Promoting foreign trade – NRW and China
NRW enjoys a long-standing partnership with the Chinese provinces of Shanxi, Jiangsu and Sichuan. This is being consolidated through a range of economic initiatives and measures for economic cooperation, research partnerships, twinning arrangements and exchange formats. These also include the scholarship and exchange programmes that GIZ has been running since the mid-1980s. To date, they have produced over 1,000 alumni with close ties to NRW. These programmes are one instrument for promoting economic partnerships and environmental cooperation between NRW and its partner provinces in China.
